Treasure Island - Geocaching On Magnetic Island

It's great fun for the whole family, and the perfect way to see some of the best sites on Magnetic Island with our very own treasure island hunt.

For those unfamiliar with this world wide-trend geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigationalworld.

Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries including Antarctica. (Source: Wikipedia).

What Should I Expect To Find?
A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name.

Larger containers such as plastic storage containers (tupperware or similar) or ammo boxes can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value.

Geocaching is often described as a "game of high-tech hide and seek," sharing many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting, letterboxing, and waymarking.

What are the rules of geocaching?

1. If you take something from inside the geocache (or "cache"), leave something of equal or greater value and NEVER remove a cache from it's original position.

2. Write about your find in the cache logbook - and replace the cache in the same place.

3. Log your experience at www.geocaching.com


MAGNETIC ISLAND GEOCACHING SITES

There are four sites, north, south, east and west on Magnetic Island for geocaching enthusiasts. Each will direct you to a very special and different part of the island.

Some sites are accessible by car, but if you're walking remember to take lots of water, a hat and sunscreen.

NORTH - please note this cache has been stolen/removed. We will be renewing it in the very near future.

(Degree of difficulty: 1):
Geting there: By bus to Horseshoe Bay foreshore or car/scooter and a short walk.
Access: All year. Best time of year is wet season!

SOUTH (Degree of difficulty: 3):
Geting there: By bus or car/scooter.
Access: All year.

EAST (Degree of difficulty: 2):
Geting there: By 4WD or a long walk - take lots of water with you.
Access: All year.

WEST (Degree of difficulty: 2):
Geting there: By 4WD or a long bicycle trip.
Access: No access during wet season (Mid Dec - Easter approx).
